# Preparing Your Garage Door for Cold Weather: Essential Tips

North Carolina winters may be mild compared to northern states, but cold snaps can still wreak havoc on unprepared garage doors. Taking proactive steps before temperatures drop can save you from inconvenient breakdowns and costly repairs.

Why Cold Weather Affects Your Garage Door

Metal components contract in cold temperatures, affecting springs, tracks, and hardware. Lubricants thicken, weatherstripping stiffens, and moisture can freeze critical parts in place.

Pre-Winter Checklist

1. Inspect and Replace Weatherstripping

The rubber seal at the bottom of your door (the astragal) keeps cold air, water, and pests out. Over time, it cracks and loses flexibility.

- Check for visible cracks or gaps, Test flexibility.stiff rubber needs replacing, Ensure the seal makes full contact with the floor, Replace if light is visible when the door is closed

2. Lubricate Moving Parts

Cold weather thickens standard lubricants. Apply a silicone-based or lithium-based garage door lubricant to:

- Torsion springs, Hinges, Rollers (if not sealed nylon) - Tracks (light coat only) - Lock mechanisms

Avoid WD-40.it's a cleaner, not a lubricant, and attracts dust.

3. Test the Balance

Cold affects spring tension. Perform the balance test:

1. Disconnect the opener 2. Lift the door halfway 3. Release and observe 4. If it moves significantly, call for spring adjustment

4. Check the Auto-Reverse Safety Feature

Place a 2x4 board flat on the ground under the door. Close the door.it should reverse upon touching the board. If not, your safety system needs attention.

5. Insulate Your Garage

An insulated garage stays warmer and reduces strain on your door:

- Add insulation panels to an uninsulated door, Seal gaps around the door frame, Insulate garage walls if possible, Consider a garage heater for extreme cold

6. Clear the Tracks

Debris in tracks causes problems year-round but is especially troublesome when combined with ice. Wipe tracks clean and ensure they're properly aligned.

7. Test Your Opener

Cold can affect opener performance:

- Test the door several times, Listen for unusual sounds, Check that lights function, Replace backup batteries if applicable

Emergency Winter Tips

If your door freezes shut:

- Never force it open.you can damage the opener or door, Apply heat with a hair dryer or heat gun, Once open, clear ice and apply lubricant, Consider installing a bottom seal heater for recurring issues
